Proposed New Catholic Cathedral
The new Cathedral will rise up out of the hill overlooking the city, and be located centrally on the axis of Bunbury’s main thoroughfare, Victoria Street.
For the next three centuries, longer even than the entire history of European settlement in Australia thus far, it will be a monument to the spirit of Bunbury and a beacon of spiritual guidance for millions of people.
It will be tall and imposing, yet inviting. Its bell tower and spire will call people to it both visually and audibly.
Its design will echo great Cathedrals of Europe, providing a sense of majesty appropriate for a seat of spiritual influence throughout the entire south of Western Australia.
Shafts of natural light will penetrate the worship space.
The Cathedral’s shape, size and scale will assert fortitude and permanence, reminding everyone who looks toward it that faith remains ever hopeful, especially in testing times.
The site itself could not be more difficult, given its location in the old part of Bunbury, with its narrow streets and one way traffic flows. The plans demonstrate a clear understanding of the site and context, while exploring a new dimension – the meaning of solitude. The roar of a hurried and noisy world outside will be temporarily suspended, as visitors are gradually immersed in the calm and serenity of the Cathedral’s beautiful interior.
The new Cathedral will be a spectacular piece of architecture which most respectfully poses questions to the reflective passer-by, and will invite a personal search for answers.
